I ист. Фронтир В американской истории западная граница территории, осваиваемая компактно проживающими группами жителей. В 1700-75 эта линия проходила примерно в 100 км к западу от Атлантического побережья и в т. н. Полосе приливов tidewater phase of settlement; после экспедиции Д. Буна Boone, Daniel 1775 переселенцы пересекли Аппалачи и освоили территории современных штатов Кентукки и Теннесси - граница отодвинулась до р. Миссисипи Mississippi River. После покупки Луизианы Louisiana Purchase в 1803 началось освоение Тихоокеанского побережья, куда переселенцы шли по тропам: Орегонской Oregon Trail, Калифорнийской California Trail и Санта-Фе Santa Fe Trail, и только через 40 лет началось освоение пустынных Великих равнин Great Plains. Для жизни времен освоения Фронтира были характерны беззаконие, авантюризм, надежда на быстрое обогащение, стычки с индейцами. Согласно результатам переписи населения, 1890 считается официальным годом завершения освоения Фронтира. Общепризнано, что Фронтир сыграл важную роль в формировании национального характера, привив американцам такие качества, как индивидуализм individualism, свободолюбие, оптимизм, веру в собственные силы.
